Childhood obesity and type II diabetes are increasing at alarming rates, and there are many children who have no idea how great it can feel to be a kid because they are literally dragged down by excess weight.

Aside from the tremendous benefit of improved overall health, being fit has many benefits for kids. Fit kids have more energy and more confidence overall than kids who are at an unhealthy weight. There have even been studies showing that fitter kids perform better academically than kids with poor fitness levels.

As parents, we are responsible for building the foundation for our kids health and wellness. We the have the power, especially when our kids are young, to give our children the gift of good habits that can translate to a longer, happier, healthier life. This is not about crash dieting or shame or singling out the overweight child. This is about establishing a healthy lifestyle for your entire family that will help your kids avoid being one of millions of adults resolving to lose weight thirty years from now.

Here are 15 tips to help get your family on the fitness track:

First, educate yourself and your child on the basics of health and nutrition.
As a general rule, the healthiest foods are closest to their natural form. The less refinement the better. So, for example, whole wheat bread is better than white bread. Learn what ingredients to avoid (the top two that our family vigilantly avoids are hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils and corn syrup). Know that just because a company's marketing department makes something sound healthy doesn't mean it is. For example, "Fruit Snacks" (the gummy fruit-flavored candy that sometimes includes a small percentage of "real fruit juice!", are not real fruit. They are gummy candies made primarily of corn syrup. I could write a whole post on this, and probably will. But for now, please just be aware and do some research if you can.

Don't be drastic.
Raising a family is a wonderful and rewarding, yet challenging and sometimes exhausting job. Don't make yourself and the whole family miserable by starving them and making drastic changes too quickly. Challenge yourself to incorporate these healthier habits into your routine at a tolerable pace and the odds of sticking to it will be much greater.

Make sure your kids eat a healthy, balanced breakfast.
Don't let your kids skip breakfast, and don't feed them the sugary cereals that are marketed to kids. Some combination of fruit, whole grains, and protein (some choices: milk, peanut butter, eggs/egg whites, beans) will give your children nutrition, and energy to sustain them through the morning.

Have your kids drink water instead.
If your kids drink juice, juice-flavored drinks, soft drinks, energy drinks, etc. they are drinking hundreds of unnecessary and unsatisfying calories

Keep convenient healthy snacks on-hand.
One of the biggest challenges is having healthy snacks on hand. I know how crazy it can be when you're frantically preparing dinner and taking a phone call and your kids are whining about wanting a snack. I know that the foods that are packed with sugar, sodium, carbs and calories are also the most convenient foods to throw your kids' way. So this part requires some planning. Prepare ahead of time some pre-cut veggies with hummus, air-pop some popcorn, pre-mix some nuts and dried fruits (add a few chocolate chips to make it feel extra special).

Serve healthier foods. Have fun serving dinner in courses, start with salad with light dressing or a broth based soup. (see my previous post The Great Big Secret to Getting Your Kids to Eat Just About Anything).

Let kids help plan and prepare meals.
Kids love to help with this kind of stuff. Helping you cook will keep them from sitting in front of the TV being bored and looking for a snack. Also, kids feel really proud when they help cook a meal - its a great time to introduce a new healthy dish - kids are more open-minded when they've had a part in its creation.

Turn off the TV.
This one is pretty obvious. I know that the TV is a cheap and easy babysitter, but if your kid sits there all morning or afternoon watching it, that "babysitter" is stealing your child's health. Turn the TV off and give your kid some other activities to do.

Make being active easy and irresistible.
If you have a yard equip it with balls, a jump rope and/or a hula hoop. If you don't have a yard or are stuck indoors because of bad weather, get games that encourage activity at home like Wii, Hyperdash, Hullaballoo, Dance Dance revolution. Put a small trampoline in the living room, or if TV is a must, put it in there. Install a pull-up bar in the doorway. My kids can't resist ours.

Get active as a family.
Kids value family time (even if they don't act like it sometimes). As a parent, your attention is a highly prized incentive. Go for family walks in the evening. Take weekend outings that are active - hiking, snow sports or even just a snowball fight, play tag or touch football in the yard, ride bikes together or shoot some hoops at the local park or gym.

Get your kids involved in sports.
It's fun, it's exciting, it keeps them moving and prevents boredom. Group sports, individual sports - it doesn't matter. It doesn't have to be a mainstream sport. Let your child choose. Football, judo, badminton, cross-country - it doesn't matter - as long as it is fun and gets them moving.

Make sure your kids get enough rest.
This one is a biggie. You'd be surprised how much sleep kids need. Here's a tip: just because your child says he's not tired doesn't mean he's not. See here for guidelines on how much sleep your child needs each night. Again, kids depend on us to keep them healthy, so get them to bed!

Incorporate favorite "junk foods"
If possible, come up with a healthier alternative that is just as yummy. But even if there is no alternative, plan for occasional treats. A 90/10 rule is great - where 90% of what you put in is healthy, with 10% reserved for an extra special treat. Just teach your child to make the calories worthwhile - make sure it is something she really enjoys.

Model the behavior.
There is no greater influencer in your child's life than you. Your kid wants to be just like you. So you need be a model of good habits.

Keep it up.
Don't forget that your child's health is at stake. Keep up the great habits. The reward of a healthy family will be so worth it!

The Greatest Gift for Your Kids This Season...A Lesson in Giving

The holiday season is a great opportunity to inspire charity in children.

The holidays are bursting with abundance.
This post is partially borrowed and modified from the collaborative article posted today on Reduce Footprints.

With a blog called Wellness KIDS, our focus, obviously is on kids' wellness. Kids’ wellness encompasses not just physical health, but psychological, social, and moral health as well. Our goal as parents is to raise children who become positive, healthy adults who see beyond themselves, beyond their small piece of the world and actively try to make the world a better place each and every day.

With that goal in mind, we are keenly aware that there are teachable moments in nearly every choice we, as parents make. And the holidays are no exception.

The holidays are such an exciting time of anticipation and expectation for children! Children who watch television are especially full of wishes for the latest and greatest toys that are flashed incessantly before their little eyes. Fortunately, this is not the case with our kids. They do, however, go to school with other kids who talk about the latest and greatest "have 2 have" toys.

We have a comfortable home, but it is not large, so we are constantly trying to downsize the clutter. It seems as if every time we give away a toy, two more come in!

So this Christmas, we are doing something different. We are downsizing the "getting" side of the holidays and upsizing the "giving" side of the season. We will try to use this economy to teach the kids about not spending in excess. We will use our gifting choices to teach our kids about caring for our planet. And we will use this season of joy and excitement to teach the kids about those less fortunate and how good it feels to help others. My fellow mommy friends and I agreed not to exchange gifts this year. Instead, we will use the money we would have spent on each other to demonstrate charity to our kids (those ideas will be my next blog post).

Of course, our kids will get gifts from Santa (us) this year, but he (we) are making an effort to give them gifts that are gentler on our planet than the normal battery loving, buzzing, ringing, noisy shiny plastic stuff.

I love the challenge of finding gifts that stimulate the mind, encourage creativity, are fun, and good to our planet. If you Google “eco-friendly gifts for kids”, you’ll find lots of great online retailers carrying a wonderful variety earth-friendly natural wooden, fabric and other types of toys. This year I tried to think of gifts that are not only natural or recyclable, but items that actually use or teach how to make use of recycled materials, and/or do something beneficial for our planet.

Here are 5 of my favorite kids’ gift ideas this year:

$8.76 - Recycled Crafts Kit

I absolutely love this one. Get the book, Recycled Crafts Kit, by Laura C. Martin and pack it in a decorated recycled box along with lots of great recycled materials to be used in the projects from the book. The book is full of great information about waste and recycling, as well as fun projects for kids to make. Cheap, educational, fun, and eco-friendly! What more could you want?

$25 - Gardening Kit

Buy a great gardening book for kids, like Roots, Boots, Buckets & Boots: Gardening Together With Children by Sharon Lovejoy ($11.16 on Amazon.com). For about $25, you could get the book, and pack it together with some great kid-sized gardening gloves, a trowel, a pot and some seeds. Or you could go all out and provide and all the items needed to do one of the great gardens in the book. This is a great way for parents to spend time with their kids, for kids to learn the wonderful art of gardening and to add back to nature.

$50 - “Adopt an Animal” at www.worldwildlife.org

Give the gift of giving. People wonder how we got our kids to be that way. They tell us about how their kids will only eat Chicken McNuggets or grilled cheese sandwiches. Our secret is this...we feed them what we eat. We all eat the same thing. No special meals. No fancy presentation. We cook nutritious meals and we eat together as a family. Also, our kids drink water, so they are not full of juice. They are super-active, rarely watch television and don't play computer games, so they have enormous appetites. And we expect them to eat.

Every morning we all eat some type of fruit and maybe some yogurt as a first course. After the fruit course is eaten, they get their second course, which may be oatmeal, a homemade egg sandwich, or a slice of Amy's whole wheat pizza, or any number of things. We call it "second breakfast." At dinner, we almost always have a salad, which is served as a first course. Once they've finished their salad, they may have the main dish. When it comes to dessert, we go against the standard advice that it should be an occassional treat that is not to be used as a reward or punishment. If the kids eat their salad and a reasonable portion of their dinner, they get dessert...every day. It works for us and our kids are REALLY active, so weight issues are not a problem for them.

The truth is, kids do what you expect them to do (mostly). If you assume they will eat, they will. If you think a food is not "kid-friendly" it won't be. But think about it. If you think, say, Indian food is too exotic for a child, what do you think kids in India eat? Seriously, if you incorporate a variety of foods into your diets on a regular basis then they are not exotic. And just because a food may be strange or exotic to you, doesn't mean your kid won't love it. Kids take their cues from us, so if you don't like a food, just suck it up, eat it and pretend that you're enjoying it. You will be rewarded with kids who enjoy the many exciting flavors of food. Not to mention all that time you'll save by not making bell pepper monster faces.

What’s On the Foods Your Family Eats? Many pesticides are oil-based so they adhere to the fruit or vegetable during rainy days. These pesticides are used, of course, to kill insects that damage the food as it grows. But that’s not all.

Sprays are also used to increase the size of the fruit without adding much to the taste of the fruit. Ever eat a huge strawberry that just tasted blah. No zippy, strawberry tang? The fruits and vegetables you purchase at the local supermarket are bred for appearance and long shelf life. That’s why out-of-season tomatoes are as hard as golf balls. They travel without bruising and have a long, long shelf life.

Here’s the point: most foods are bred for reasons other than nutrition and good taste. These vegetables and fruits, grown on huge commercial farms, are sprayed constantly to keep bugs and critters at bay. But those sprays make their way into the food and, ultimately, into you, your child and other family members.

What About All-Natural and Organic?

Better, but be forewarned. There are numerous definitions – some legal within certain states – that describe what can be labeled allnatural. Perfect example? MSG, aka monosodium glutamate. This isn’t something that kids should ingest. It leads to hyperactivity, hot flashes and other negative symptoms. Yet, the fact is MSG is, indeed, all natural. It’s just processed to death. The point is, I don’t want my brood eating MSG but it may be contained in “all natural” foods. Check the product label.

MSG is often disguised as “natural flavors” or “natural flavor additives” because, technically, they are.

Don’t be misled by organic and all natural labels. All is not as it appears in many cases – even when the items are purchased in health-food stores!

How Should I Prepare Foods?

Call me a pessimist but I assume all foods are coated with chemical sprays and laced with hormones. The first thing I do is wash all fruits and veggies using a scrub brush. This removes dirt, tiny insects and at least some of those oil-based sprays on your foods.

I then dry each item carefully, rubbing hard enough to remove more pesticides but not bruise the fruit or veggie.

I bag hard fruits like apples and peaches and place in the fridge within easy reach of my kids. Soft fruits like bananas and mangos I leave out, but use quickly before they get too mushy – something my kids won’t tolerate.

Rinse all lettuces and greens well. Spin dry, wrap in cloth toweling and store in the fridge. The cloth will absorb a little moisture which will prevent the greens from going limp.

Finally, I avoid buying processed foods whenever possible. Sorry, but I can’t even understand some of the ingredients in these boxed lunches and sugary snacks. If you keep these foods out of your house, you and your kids won’t be tempted.

Hey, anybody got any other suggestions for protecting our kids from the foods they eat?

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://wellnesskids.blogspot.com/2008/11/whats-on-foods-your-family-eats-chances.html' title='What’s On the Foods Your Family Eats? As he is our first born, we were inclined to spoiling him and he had nearly every train in the set. We loved the trains - we loved the fact that they were wooden. They had that reassuring feel of old-fashioned toys. We loved watching him use his imagination, making up his own story lines - he could have played for hours straight, if we let him. His brother, who was a toddler at the time, loved the trains, too. He especially loved to explore them with his mouth. We didn't think much of it.

Then there was the recall. Suddenly it was announced that certain Thomas trains were painted with lead-based paint! Suddenly we had to take away my son’s favorite playthings and mail them off. Suddenly we had to worry about whether our kids had toxic lead levels in their little bodies. Our blissful naiveté was taken from us. How could we know that the remaining trains were okay (in fact – they were not – it was revealed later that more of the trains contained lead, as well). How could we know that other painted toys were safe? In the meantime, our son asked us for months, when he could have his treasured trains back.

The trains were just the beginning. Since then, reports have come out about dangerous BPA in baby bottles and baby formula tainted with melamine. It has gotten to the point where I’m appalled, but no longer shocked.

The scary thing is, our children’s developing bodies are at much higher risk of suffering the negative effects of these poisons than adults. Studies by the Environmental Protection Agency show infants up to age two to be, on average, ten times more vulnerable and, in some cases, up to 65 times more vulnerable to carcinogenic chemicals than adults. Autism, ADHD, asthma, learning disabilities, cancer, fertility problems and birth defects are increasingly associated with the toxins we are exposed to.

According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), hundreds of chemicals are now found in the bodies of Americans, including babies in the womb. Laboratory tests by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) have found an average of 200 industrial chemicals in the umbilical cord blood of 10 babies – many of the chemicals linked to serious and potentially irreversible health problems.

So, what can we, as citizens, as consumers – as parents – do? Well, of course we can start by educating ourselves on the known dangers that are out there and steer clear of them. Of course, many of the dangerous toxins haven’t been outed by studies yet. So the best we can do to protect ourselves is to try to steer clear of plastics, opting in favor of natural materials such as glass, metal and wood; buy organic goods, and use products that are as close to their natural form as possible.

On the larger front, we can proactively encourage lawmakers to enact legislation that will protect us and our children from being poisoned. The Kid-Safe Chemicals Act was first introduced to Congress in 2005 and was reintroduced this year.

The Kid-Safe Chemical Act would overhaul our nation's chemical regulatory law by:

* requiring that industrial chemicals be safe for infants, kids and other vulnerable groups;
* requiring that new chemicals be safety tested before they are sold;
* requiring chemical manufacturers to test and prove that the 62,000 chemicals already on the market that have never been tested are safe in order for them to remain in commerce;
* requiring EPA to review "priority" chemicals, those which are found in people, on an expedited schedule;
* requiring regular biomonitoring to determine what chemicals are in people and in what amounts;
* requiring regular updates of health and safety data and provides EPA with clear authority to request additional information and tests;
* providing incentives for manufacturers to further reduce health hazards;
* requiring EPA to promote safer alternatives and alternatives to animal testing;
* protecting state and local rights; and
* requiring that this information be publicly available.

Through the Kid-Safe Chemicals Act we can give our children a safer and healthier future. Write letters to your State Senators and Representatives to let them know that this matters to you, that you want our children to stop being poisoned and that we need this legislation enacted.

With support from you, me and others who care about the health of the children and all the people of our nation, we can make a big step in protecting ourselves (and our environment) and future generations from the dangerous toxins that poison us today.

The Today Show must be reading my mind...

Imagine my surprise when I saw that, just today, the Today Show featured a segment on "6 toxins that lurk in your home" discussing some of the same health dangers in our latest blog posts! Kids are experiencing asthma symptoms earlier and more severely according to a study released by the Environment Protection Agency. The study goes on to report that other illnesses are more prevalent – colds, flus and other “childhood” diseases.

Much of the medical community has turned it’s attention to the rise of more virulent strains of diseases, immune to antibiotics, and indeed, there’s a lot to be made for this case. However, it’s also reasonable to assume that there may be more than one source of the problem. Stronger germs, sure. But how about polluted air? Really polluted air in millions of homes?

As we’ve all become more energy conscious, we’ve added insulation, replaced drafty windows and kept the air inside warm and toasty. Problem is, that air tight box also traps dangerous pathogens – mold, dust and dander, volatile chemicals from cleaners and personal products. If the house can’t breathe, what’s happening to the air in your home? The air becomes thick with poisons from everyday products – everything from dish washer soap to underarm deodorant.

Why Air Filters Make Things Worse
So, moms and dads rush out to buy expensive ionizers and air filtering systems to solve the problem of indoor pollution. But here’s the thing – filtered air isn’t really filtered. In fact, if you don’t maintain the air cleaning gear, you’re making things worse for the family.

Here’s why. Air filtering systems draw in air, run it through a filter and pump out clean air. So far so good. But here’s the problem. Within hours of installing a new filter, it already contains pollutants – pollutants through which all other air must pass. And as these pollutants continue to collect, whether in an ionizer or other air filter, the more pollutants are pumped back into the interior of your home.

Filtered air of any kind is filtered for a while, but as more and more containments build up within the collection device, the less effective the air cleaner.

What To Do About Indoor Air Pollution
Use fewer pollutants.
Use cleansing, full-spectrum light sources throughout the house.
Ventilate regularly. Open a window for goodness sake.
Don’t use filter or ionizer air cleaners. They can make the problem worse.
Use exhaust fans or work outside when using toxins. Follow label instructions.
Make your own cleaning products, clean and save a ton of cash at the same time.
Purchase natural fiber clothing for your children.

And that’s just the beginning. Had the furnace tuned up lately? Had the AC cleaned since you bought it? The stuff that grows in wet dark places is gross – like a high school science experiment gone horribly wrong.

There’s plenty you can do to go pro-active in keeping a really clean home. And you won’t find anything useful in the cleaning products aisle of the SuperMagaMart.

The Cleaner Your Home, The Greater the Danger

You’re taught that a shiny, sparkling home is the sign of a family that cares about its health, right? Wrong. The fact is, the air inside your home is more polluted than the air outside – even if you live within whiffing distance of the town dump. And we’re not just talking about odors.

We’re talking highly-volatile chemical compounds that are released into the air every time you spray for mold. Tiny droplets of this highly toxic chemical can float in the air for days. It lands on furniture, food preparation surfaces and in the lungs of all family members.

But it gets worse when you factor in the chemicals that are released from furniture cushions and even the carpet. Formaldehyde – used to embalm dead bodies – is used in the manufacture of couch stuffing and rugs, and molecules of this toxin can be released years after the carpet or couch is purchased.

Other sources of indoor pollution:

personal care products like deodorants, colognes and hair sprays

any store-bought cleaning agent, mildew killer, bubbles that scrub, etc. – all toxic

dry-cleaned clothes. You wouldn’t BELIEVE what they put on those outfits and it all makes its way into the air that you and your family breathe.

paints, stains and other home maintenance products are some of the most toxic products on the planet

The list goes on. Just look under your sink. Read the labels of that HEAVY DUTY DRAIN CLEANER. Holy cow. That stuff will eat through solid steel! Whoa. Read the label on any drain unclogger. If that doesn’t scare you, this will.

We spend 90% of our time in our homes breathing in these toxins. Somebody open a window, please!

Yep, part of it’s about ventilating your energy efficient, seamless castle. But, by going proactive and using every day, homemade products, you can eliminate the dangers flying through the air of the family room including volatile organic compounds, molds, viruses, disease-causing bacteria and stuff you don’t even want to know about.

Come on back soon. Together, we can clean up the environment one house at a time.
